The Best Beaches in Oahu for Families

Waikiki Oahu

Oahu has over 100 miles of coast line, which holds some of the world’s best beaches. With all of the coast line, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect beach! So you may ask what beach is best for families in Oahu? Luckily we’ve come to a few of our favorites!

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki is one of the world’s most famous beaches. It is in the heart of Honolulu, with an abundance of activities to do around the beach. The beach itself offers calm and shallow waters that make it safe for younger children to swim and play. Waikiki also has lifeguard stations along the beach providing comfort for the safety of families. The waters of Waikiki are great for people looking at going paddleboarding or even taking a canoe ride. When the kids are done playing, it is quick to go find almost any food you desire, with hundreds of restaurants lining the shoreline you are sure to get something tasty!

If you find yourself at the beach in Waikiki on Friday, stay around until sundown where you’ll be met by a vibrant firework show!

Kailua Beach Park

This beautiful beach is located around 30 minutes from downtown Honolulu. The shallow waters of Kailua feature much fewer reefs than other spots on the island. With the mostly sandy floor, it gives the water a lovely turquoise color. The waters tend to be calm.

For the parents that drive out to Kailua Beach Park, you’ll be happy to know that the park offers plenty of parking and clean restrooms. Along with the facilities, there are also 2 lifeguard stations making sure the beach goers have a safe experience.

Ala Moana Beach Park

Ala Moana is located in the heart of Honolulu, and was even voted in the Top 10 for “best city parks” where it was ranked 6th!

This beach is one of the more popular beaches on the island and has a shoreline that spans about a half of a mile and 100 acres of park space! Once you’re ready to hit the water, you’ll be met with a beautiful man made lagoon. The nearshore ocean bottom on the middle and west end are a little more rocky. If you are looking to have the kids jump in the water, the west end closer to Diamond Head has a soft sandy bottom. The beach is also patrolled daily by lifeguards.

If you’re looking to enjoy a pleasant picnic or even a barbeque, this is your spot! If cooking or having a picnic isn’t what you are looking for, then you will be pleased to know that there are tons of food concessions near the park!

Ko Olina Lagoons

The Ko Olina area was developed in the 1980’s, and it now provides the area with amazing options to fit everyone’s needs from swimming, snorkeling, or even a round of golf. The Ko Olina Lagoons offer four man made lagoons that provide shelter, keeping the waters calm. If you fancy a little bit of snorkeling, you are able to snorkel out towards the openings of the lagoon to experience some amazing underwater life! It is important to note that the currents towards the openings can get strong, so be cautious.
Along with the amazing white sand beaches, there are 5 miles of walking paths to enjoy an evening stroll on!

Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is known for being one of the best beaches in the world, and for good reason.

The beach has perfect white powdery sand for you to relax on while you watch the beautiful turquoise waters. Even more unique is the view of the Mokulua Islands just off in the distance.

The calm waters offer a great spot to cool off.

This beach is also a popular sunrise and sunset viewing spot that will not disappoint!

Waimea Bay Beach Park

Waimea is one of the most famous beaches on the island. During the summer months, the waters at Waimea Bay are calm and provide a safe spot to swim. There are lifeguards daily to help patrol and keep the swimmers safe.

If you find yourself near Waimea in the winter, you’ll be able to view the famous 30’ waves. Later in the year, the Eddie Aikau Invitational takes place. You’ll be able to view some of the best big wave surfers in the world!
