A local guide to Waikiki boat tours
We've been running trips out of Kewalo Basin Harbor for years. Here's what's worth knowing before you book — what each experience is really like, and when to go.
Waikiki boat tours
All of our tours leave from Kewalo Basin Harbor at 1125 Ala Moana Blvd, about five minutes from Waikiki with parking at the harbor. We sail two boats: the Keanuenue, a 30ft power catamaran for up to six guests, and the Big Kahuna, a 54ft double-decker power boat. Every trip is capped well below the vessel's legal limit, which is the single biggest difference between our tours and a packed group excursion.
Turtle Canyon snorkeling
Turtle Canyon is a reef roughly two miles off Waikiki where Hawaiian green sea turtles gather to be cleaned by reef fish — locals call it a turtle car wash. You can't swim to it from the beach, so a boat is the only way to get there. Sightings are guaranteed on our snorkel tours: if we don't find a turtle, you can ride again free. Gear, flotation and in-water guides are included, and no experience is needed.
Waikiki sunset cruises
Our shared sunset cruise runs along Oahu's south shore with open views of Diamond Head and the Honolulu skyline as the light goes gold. It departs between 5:00 and 6:00 PM depending on the season, and it's BYOB (cans, not glass) with no swimming — an easy, low-key evening. Book it as a private charter and you can time the departure to the sunset and jump in to snorkel or swim first, when the reef is at its quietest.
Whale watching in Honolulu
Thousands of North Pacific humpbacks migrate to Hawaii each winter to breed and calve. Our dedicated whale watch tours run January through March, when sightings are most reliable, and last about two hours. Federal law keeps all boats at least 100 yards from a humpback, though curious whales sometimes close that distance themselves. Shared whale tours carry a free re-ride if we don't spot one.
Friday night fireworks cruises
The Hilton Hawaiian Village has launched fireworks over Waikiki every Friday night since 1988. Watching from the water means an unobstructed view with the skyline behind the show and no competing for space on the beach. We run a one-hour fireworks cruise and, from March through August, a longer combined sunset and fireworks cruise. Both are BYOB.
Private boat charters
A private charter gives your group the boat and a flexible itinerary — snorkel, cruise at sunset, look for whales, or combine them. The Keanuenue hosts up to six guests; the Big Kahuna handles up to 45 for birthdays, proposals, memorials, corporate outings and custom events. Tell us the occasion and we'll match the boat, the timing and the route to it.
